Notary Public
WHAT IS A NOTARY?
A Notary Public is a qualified lawyer - a member of the third and oldest branch of the legal profession in the United Kingdom appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and can trace its origins to Roman times.
Notaries are mainly concerned with the preparation and authentication of documents for use abroad. A Notary's signature and seal is accepted and recognised as valid throughout the world. Not all solicitors are Notaries, in fact there are only around 760 Notaries throughout England and Wales.
A lot of people ask me about the history of the English Notarial profession and how we differ from "ordinary" solicitors. Well, we can trace the origin of the English Notary back to the 12th Century to the time of Edward the Confessor and originally took our authority from the Pope in Rome! If you would like to know more, here is an excellent paper written by German Notary Volker Heinz on English Notarial Profession.
This Podcast is an edited version of an interview with Martin Silverman at Marlow FM radio station when Martin discusses the work of a Notary and the sort of situations when individuals or business might need the services of a Notary.
